Demikian disampaikan otoritas maritim Swedia seperti dilansir kantor berita
AFP, Jumat (5/3/2010).

El Nino Dissipating, But May Linger Through 2010

El Nino Dissipating, But May Linger Through 2010

NEW YORK - The deadly El Nino weather anomaly should dissipate by early summer in the northern hemisphere, but there is a chance a weak version will linger for the rest of 2010, according to a U.S. government report issued Thursday.

The federal government's Climate Prediction Center said in a monthly update the warm waters which are a hallmark of the phenomenon are slowly easing, and this indicates "a transition to ... neutral conditions" in June or July.

But the CPC said there are "several models (which) suggest the potential of continued weak El Nino conditions through 2010, while others predict the development of La Nina conditions later in the year."

The CPC is a unit of the U.S. National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration.

El Nino means little boy in Spanish, and results in an abnormal warming of waters in the equatorial Pacific. It also normally disrupts hurricane formation in the Atlantic.

The anomaly wreaks havoc in global weather patterns, especially the Asia-Pacific region, and was first noticed by Latin American anchovy fishermen in the 19th century who named it after the Christ child because it normally appears during Christmastime.

La Nina has the opposite effect of El Nino. It leads to cooler waters in the Pacific Ocean and is said to spur storm formation during the annual hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean.

This year's El Nino was moderate to strong, according to the CPC, as sea surface temperatures stayed warm through February. But it was linked to the severe winter storms which have lashed the eastern United States.

It was also blamed for the weak monsoon which badly damaged the cane crop in India, forcing the world's biggest sugar consumer import larger amounts of the sweetener and sparking a rally which drove prices to a 29-year high.

A severe dry spell has also hit the archipelago countries of Indonesia and the Philippines, forcing the latter to book large orders of rice.

The Philippines is the world's biggest rice importer. Manila booked a record 2.6 million tonnes of the food staple for its 93 million people in 2010.

CPC said the effect of El Nino this spring would include drier-than-average weather over Indonesia.

In the United States, there should be above-average rain in the Southwest, the south-central states, and Florida, and below-average precipitation in the Pacific Northwest and Great Lakes region, CPC forecast.

If El Nino persists into June, that would bring the weather pattern into the start of the annual hurricane season in the Atlantic, raising the prospect it may again hinder the formation of storms in the area.

The last major El Nino struck in 1997/98, killing scores of people and causing billions of dollars in damages around the world through floods in Latin America and drought in Asia and Australia.

Menghindari Risiko Tersambar Petir

Irna Gustia - detikHealth

(Foto: Reuters)

VIVAnews
- Sepanjang akhir pekan lalu, penduduk suatu kota kecil di wilayah tandus Australia bagian utara mengalami berkah yang jarang terjadi. Kota mereka dilanda hujan ikan.

Laman harian

BARCELONA, Spain – Monstrous waves that smashed into aMediterranean cruise ship flooded people's cabins, broke windows in a restaurant and sent terrified travelers screaming for doctors, passengers said Thursday.

Claude Cremex, 73, of Marseille, France said he was in his cabin resting because of rough seas when the walls of water hit the Cypriot-owned Louis Majesty, which was carrying 1,350 passengers and 580 crew members off the coast of northeastern Spain.

"A lot of water came in. Many cabins were flooded," said Cremex, who was traveling with his wife. "Many people were very frightened," he told The Associated Press.

Cremex said he did not see the waves himself but later viewed the damage. "It was spectacular," he said as the ship sat docked atBarcelona's port with passengers sunning themselves on deck the day after the accident.

Amateur video footage taken by a passenger and aired on Spanish television showed the instant when a huge, foamy wave hit what appeared to be a restaurant or lounge area, blowing out the window, triggering screams and sending shin-high water gushing along the floor. A woman is heard crying in the background.

The ship's owner and operator, Louis Cruise Lines, said the vessel was struck Wednesday by three "abnormally high" waves more than 33 feet (10 meters) high that broke glass windshields in the forward section. Two people died and 14 were slightly hurt, the company said.

Large waves are not rare in the Mediterranean, but ones that size occur only once or twice a year, said Marta de Alfonso, an oceanographer with the Spanish government.

"Suddenly we saw a wave that went up above our level, and I said to my husband, 'tonight we will not have to wash the windows,'" said Claudine Armand of France, who was in her cabin at that point. "Right then we heard we heard a loud noise, and it was the wave that hit us."

"When we came out of the room we saw the wave had flooded everything," she told Associated Press Television News.

Pierre Languillon, also of France, said damage was extensive and he saw many people with superficial injuries.

"They called for doctors, as many doctors as there were. Luckily nothing happened to us, but I think we averted a catastrophe."

Louis Cruise Lines spokesman Michael Maratheftis said 14 passengers who suffered only minor injuries were taken to hospital as a precaution.

Arrangements have been made to fly all 1,350 passengers back home Thursday and the ship will carry on with its normal cruise schedule later this month after repairs are completed, he told the AP from Cyprus.

Maratheftis said the two dead passengers — a German and an Italian — suffered fatal injuries from the glass shards and ripped-out window frames and furniture.

"It was three waves, one after the other. The damage was done by the second and the third waves. We are talking about waves that exceeded 10 meters in height. This was unforeseen and unpredicted because the weather was not really that bad," Maratheftis said.

De Alfonso said there was in fact a big storm in the area at the time and the waves might have been stirred up by fierce winds. Waves often come in threes, she said.

Another passenger, Jean Claude Fery, of Marseille, said he was in his cabin looking out the porthole at tremendously turbulent seas. "I have never seen waves so big. It was unbelievable."

A Louis Cruise Lines statement said the waves smashed windows in a public area on deck 5 on the forward part of the vessel.

The ship was on a 12-day cruise from the ports of Genoa and Marseilles in the western Mediterranean, calling at Tangiers, Casablanca, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Cadiz, Cartagena, Barcelona and had been due to return to Genoa on Thursday.

Maratheftis said many passengers have already left the ship to return home.

Louis Cruise Lines' Web site says the ship is 680 feet (207 meters) long, and features 10 passenger decks and 732 staterooms along with various bars, pools, restaurants and shops.

Chile keeps shaking, rattling survivors

Chile keeps shaking, rattling survivorsReuters – A Chilean girl arrives with donations of clothing and food for earthquake survivors in the south of the …

CONCEPCION, Chile (Reuters) – Frightened by more heavy aftershocks, coastal residents in Chile camped out on hillsides on Thursday, five days after one of the strongest earthquakes in a century killed more than 800 people.

An emotional President Michelle Bachelet, a popular leader who steps down next week, pleaded with Chileans to stop hoarding supplies as aid reached central Pacific coast towns hardest hit by Saturday's 8.8 magnitude quake and surging tsunamis.

She told local television that the country would likely seek international credit for the reconstruction effort following damage estimated at up to $30 billion, saying rebuilding would take at least three to four years.

The original quake broke bridges and highways, cracked modern buildings in the capital's suburbs, shattered vats at Chile's famous vineyards and briefly shut down the country's copper mines, the biggest in the world.

Panicked over a possible repeat of the ferocious tide, people scurried up the hills near hard-hit Concepcion after one particularly strong aftershock on Wednesday; another 6.1 magnitude tremor jolted the country that evening.

Retailers were left reeling after looters sacked shelves and burned a supermarket.

While the death toll stood at 802, hundreds more were unaccounted for. Rescue teams working with search dogs searched collapsed buildings in Concepcion through the night, including one destroyed 15-story building where a handful of people thought to be trapped.

But the government official overseeing the Bio Bio region most ravaged by the quake said the search for corpses should be delayed as emergency workers focus on finding the living and distributing food.

"(The search for bodies) has taken up too much time, we are going to move to a second phase. Our priority will be to attend to the living," said the official, Jaime Toha.

Many families in coastal areas were camped on hillsides, scared to return to their homes.

Very few survivors emerged from the water after enormous waves sucked them out to sea on Saturday.

"It's amazing to be alive," said 43-year-old non-swimmer Bernardita Vives, who was tossed back on shore with broken bones after the sea dragged her away from Constitucion, a picturesque coastal town that was devastated and lost an estimated 350 people.

Bachelet told Chileans there was enough food, water and energy to go around, and called for calm after the army stepped in to arrest looters. Curfews were still in place in some areas to prevent more disorder.

Looting slowed as packages of aid with basic staples like rice, oil, sugar and pasta arrived to the most affected areas and hundreds of troops patrolled the streets.

But citizens in Constitucion griped that some merchants were selling food at three times the normal price. [ID:nN03244474] Long lines formed at two recently opened supermarkets in Concepcion where customers were only allowed to buy a limited amount of goods.

The country's top oil refinery was seriously damaged and could be shut down for a month, boosting the need for fuel imports in the world's top copper producer [ID:nN03120690]

Another major refinery could be up and running by next week. But Chile, which produces almost no fossil fuels, was stepping up imports from Asia and the United States.

Economists and financial analysts said Chile could be expected to get back on its feet soon, partly because it has robust savings to help it rebuild but also because most of its rich copper mines were only briefly affected by the quake.

El Mercurio newspaper said the affected mines lost only around 6,000 tonnes of copper when production was halted by power outages.
