Flood wrecks havoc in Madeira Island

Heavy rain resulted into flood and mudslides caused several death and injury in Portuguese Atlantic Island near Madeira. A quote was dispatched by the local authorities from Madeira Island which confirmed about the causalities in the disaster on late Saturday. The flood affected area is a highly popular tourist destination. Bridges, buildings, cars, trees and other properties are totally devastated by hit of flood.

Telephone and electricity supply is affected as wind is blowing over a speed of 100 kmp on that area. Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates announced to visit the area for a field inspection by himself as soon as the weather improves as he is deeply concerned by the deaths and damages done due to this natural calamity.

A request for emergency aid has been reported to European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso from Madeira’s regional chief Alberto Joao Jardim. The total population of Madeira is around 265,000 and according to Portugal’s local media, this storm is deadliest since October 1993 which killed 8 people.

The total number of death, missing and injuries are not clear yet. BBC said the condition of the area is really pathetic as roads literally became rivers due to tremendous water flow and big streets are blocked with broken boulders and trees.
