Residents in coastal North Queensland are attempting to resume normality with a massive cleanup operation in place in the wake of severe tropical cyclone Yasi, which struck the region late on Wednesday, Feb. 2.
The monster storm packed hugelydestructive winds of up to 290 kilometers per hour (180 mph) with torrential rainfall, flash flooding, and tidal surges.
Amazingly no one was hurt, although a young man died shortly after the cyclone had passed through due to asphyxiation from running agenerator in a closed room.
A married couple, reported missing after their yacht capsized and sank, have been found safe, according to Queensland Police.
Many communities are still without power, and residents in Tully Heads and Hull Heads—some of the worst affected areas—have been closed to the public after locals requested privacy to clean up the remnants of their homes without onlookers.Although the cyclonic system had weakened to a tropical low by Friday, extreme weather continued to affect Australia, with associated severe storms and flash flooding in the southern state of Victoria on Friday and Saturday.
Queensland has had a hard summer so far after floods ravaged it and other eastern states, killing 35 people. The cost of damages to industry and infrastructure has run into the billions, with Cyclone Yasi adding an extra $2 billion to the bill, according to AAP.
