Authorities in Iceland says hundreds of people were evacuated after a volcano erupted beside a glacier in southern Iceland.
The eruption occurred late last night beside the country's fifth largest glacier.
Authorities initally said the eruption was below the glacier. However, scientists conducting an aerial survey in daylight said that's not true. The discovery lessens the chances from flooding from a glacier melt.
A geologist says it's the best possible place for an eruption since the area is not covered by ice. Scientists can see lava flows in the half mile long fissure, and authorities are watching for
further activity.
Fearing flooding from the glacier melt, authorities evacuated some 450 people in the area 100 miles southeast of the capital, Reykjavik, as a precaution. But no damage or injuries have been reported.
