La Nina expected to usher in warmer, drier fall and winter

Hello sunshine, goodbye rain would be an appropriate theme song for the transition of El Nino to La Nina.

The weather phenomenon named El Nino, or the Little Boy, and La Nina, meaning the Little Girl, describes the periodic cooling of Pacific Ocean surface temperatures. A La Nina event will mean a warmer and drier fall and winter for Central Texas, but the threat of widespread drought looms after the Lone Star State experienced the most devastating extended dry spells in recorded history in 2008-09.

La Nina typically results in dry weather, while last fall El Nino was rightly heralded as a drought drencher.

"We are definitely in a La Nina situation," said meteorologist Dennis Cavanaugh, at the National Weather Service's Fort Worth office.
