A typhoon striking North Korea earlier this month left dozens of people dead and ruined thousands of buildings, reported state media Wednesday.
North Korean authorities released for the first time any account of death and casualties from Typhoon Kompasu, which struck the Korean Peninsula on Sept. 2. According to the announcement made through KCNA (Korean Central News Agency), dozens died, some 9,000 buildings were destroyed, roads were damaged, and it wiped out about 40 miles of railway tracks.
"Several dozen people have died throughout the country due to torrential rain, strong winds, and landslides," said the KCNA according to BBC News. An exact number of the dead was not released.
North Korea, still in the process of recovering from last month’s flooding, is relying on help from South Korea to ensure food supplies for its citizens. South Korea will provide 5,000 tons of rice and other supplies this week, according to AP.
