ATHENS (AFP) – Local authorities evacuated three children's summer camps after a forest fire stirred up by heat and strong winds broke out Saturday in the Attica region, south east of Athens, the fire brigade said.
Fifty or so men, four water bombing planes and two helicopters were at the scene trying to put out the blaze caused by heat and strong winds, located near the port of Laurium some 60 kilometres (35 miles) south east of the Greek capital.
The blaze burnt a pine forest and shrub lands, while four planes and two helicopters were also sent out to help the fire brigade contain another forest fire north of Athens near the Euboean Gulf.
The civil protection service has placed the whole of the Attica region under a state of alert, due to the high risk of fires from heat and wind in the region.
