Extreme Weather: Brutal Weather Conditions in US & Abroad

Extreme weather conditions in the US and abroad are causing safety hazards and panic as Holiday traveling continues.

In California:

A storm has inundated parts of California with up to 7 inches of rain and spawned minor flooding, mudslides and road closures.

But forecasters warned Monday the bad weather's real impact may be yet to come.

The National Weather Service said more than 3 additional inches of rain expected across the region by Wednesday will hit already saturated hillsides, increasing the possibility of slides and flash floods.

Weenend rains that pounded California smashed rainfall records, caused numerous traffic accidents and downed trees.

The weather service said rainfall accumulation could reach 20 inches in some isolated locations by Wednesday, when the first phase of the storm is expected to pass. After a brief respite, it is forecast to return late Christmas Day.

Over in Lake Tahoe:

A potent winter storm over the weekend dumped 5-6 feet of fresh snow at the higher elevations, just in time for the busy Christmas and New Year's holidays.

And weather forecasters say more is on the way.

The storm that started Friday brought more than 6 feet of snow to Mount Rose Ski Tahoe southwest of Reno.

Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley USA on the west side of Lake Tahoe picked up about 5 feet of new snow, as did Kirkwood, which reports receiving 7 feet in the past week.

A winter storm warning remained in effect for the Lake Tahoe region through Monday afternoon.

The forecast from the National Weather Service calls for continued snow throughout the week.

In Colorado:

Snow that forecasters say could reach "epic proportions" is blanketing parts of western Colorado, leaving some cars along Interstate 70 stranded.

The snow isn't expected to make it to the east side of the Rockies, but winds of up 80 mph are battering the Colorado Springs area. Property owners tell The Gazette that windows of several vehicles have been broken by flying rocks. Gusts toppled a tractor-trailer on Interstate 25.

The National Weather Service says the central Colorado mountains could get up to a foot of snow by Tuesday and the top of the Grand Mesa and areas around Crested Butte above 9,000 feet could have 6 to 8 feet of snow by Thursday.

Eastbound I-70 in Vail closed because of vehicles stuck in the snow, but was reopened Monday afternoon.

In Europe:

Workers at Europe's major airports cleared snow and ice Monday while travelers scrambled to try to reach their destinations for Christmas.

Airports in London, Paris and Germany reported canceling dozens of flights as Europe remained in winter's icy and snowy grip, CNN reported.

Frigid temperatures and extreme conditions have gripped Europe since Saturday, from Northern Ireland to Bulgaria, with snow, ice and fog throwing travel plans into chaos. Below-normal temperatures were expected to remain in northern Europe for part of the week.

Only one of London Heathrow's two runways was operational Monday, a day after nearly all flights were canceled, airport officials said. Hundreds of travelers camped out at Heathrow and Gatwick airports, waiting out the weather.

Airport officials in France said Roissy Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports both were expected to cancel 30 percent of their flights.
