TROPICAL Cyclone Laurence has intensified into a category four storm, with a cyclone warning current for coastal areas from Broome to Port Hedland.

At 5am today, FESA reported that Severe Tropical Cyclone Laurence was a category four system, estimated to be 215km west-southwest of Broome and 110km north-northwest of Wallal.

It is moving south at 4km/h towards the Eighty Mile Beach area of the eastern Pilbara.

Very destructive winds with gusts to 230km/h are expected to develop in areas east of Pardoo to Sandfire Roadhouse, including Wallal from early this afternoon.

There is also the risk of a dangerous storm tide in coastal areas as the cyclone centre crosses the coast.

Tides are likely to rise significantly above the normal high tide mark with damaging waves and dangerous flooding.

Gales are likely to be occurring along the coast between Bidyadanga and Pardoo and may extend to Broome, Port Hedland and adjacent inland parts later today.

Heavy rainfall is expected in coastal parts of the western Kimberleyand eastern Pilbara during Monday, extending to the inland eastern Pilbara on Tuesday.

A YELLOW ALERT remains current for people in or near communities of Bidyadanga to Pardoo.

Residents are urged to take action and prepare to shelter from a cyclone by fastening all cyclone screens and securing all boats, caravans, trailers, garden sheds, outdoor furniture, water tanks and LPG bottles.

A BLUE ALERT is current for people in or near communities of De Grey to Port Hedland, including South Hedland, Warralong, Yarri Mine, Warrawagine Station and surrounding communities.

Residents are asked to prepare for dangerous weather, secure or remove loose material and ensure an emergency kit is complete.

An ALL CLEAR WITH CAUTION has been issued for people in or near Eco Beach as wind and storm surge dangers have passed.

A CYCLONE WARNING is current for coastal areas from Broome to Port Hedland.

A CYCLONE WATCH is current for adjacent inland parts of the southwest Kimberley and north Pilbara, extending inland as far as Telfer.

You should prepare your home inside and out. Keep up to date with the development of the cyclone through radio, television or the internet.

Road closures are in place at Gibb River Rd, Cape Leveque Rd and Great Northern Hwy from the Derby turnoff to Fitzroy Crossing.

After almost a week of intense activity which has brought heavy rain to a large area of the Kimberley, the North-West was put on high alert again on Saturday morning with Laurence threatening to strengthen over the weekend.

Laurence peaked this week as a category five storm, packing winds of 285km/h at its centre, one of the strongest cyclones seen in Australia.

However it crossed the coast in a remote stretch of the north Kimberley, causing little damage, but dumping hundreds of millimetres or rain across a massive region, causing flooding in some parts.
