Emergency authorities are assembling a strike-force in Western Australia's north Pilbara as Cyclone Laurence approaches the coast as a category four storm.

After weaving across the Kimberley for a week, Cyclone Laurence is now bearing down on the north Pilbara coast.

It is forecast to cross the coast overnight, bringing with it very destructive winds of up to 230 kilometres per hour.

The Fire and Emergency Service Authority's regional director Rob Cox says the storm's intensity has them worried.

"We've been putting together a strike-team for after the impact to inspect the damage and see what assistance we can do," he said.

FESA has spent the morning contacting residents of Pardoo, Wallal and the Sandfire Roadhouse, warning them to relocate unless they have sufficient shelter.

Gale-force winds and heavy rain are forecast for throughout the day.
