Typhoon Megi gains strength, approaches south China
MANILA, PHILIPPINES : Typhoon Megi has gained strength over the South China Sea to Category 4 intensity, after leaving the Philippines reportedly killing at least 19 people, mostly in Northern Luzon, local media reported Wednesday.
Typhoon Megi currently holds sustained winds of approximately 135 mph, traveling north at around 10 mph, and moving towards the coastal areas in the central part of Guangdong. It is expected to make landfall on Saturday with an intensity of Catergory 2 or 3 on the east and north area of Hong Kong.
"We expect that the strong winds and torrential rain brought by Megi will increase the probability of geological disasters happening in the south such as floods, land and mudslides," China's National Meteorological Center said.
Due to the large size of the typhoon, Megi, which has increased its size and strength since leaving the Philippines, will likely impact weather in south China and Taiwan.
Damages in the northern region of the Philippines are reportedly of about USD 30 million, destroying infrastructure and crops. In addition, nearly 5,000 houses were damaged or destroyed by Megi's winds.
Noel Lopez, provincial administrator of Isabela province in the Philippines said that it was "the worst typhoon to hit out province in nearly 20 years", stating that the lives of more than 256,000 people were affected.
